Last year, I did a printmaking project with my 6th graders, where they designed their own koi fish after looking at Chinese designs. While I had some students do a great job, it was like pulling teeth to get the kids to draw a koi fish! Apparently, it was "too hard".
This year, I tried the lesson again, with a simple difference: I made a "how to draw a koi fish" board. It shows the steps to make a simple koi fish, but I encouraged the students to change the scales, change the face, change the fins, etc. And, all of them did! They seemed to enjoy the project, and the results were wonderful.
